Getting an Indiana driver license involves a few clear steps: a learner permit, required driving hours, and an official skills test. This guide walks through what Indiana requires at every age, in plain language. Elektra Driving Academy can help with each step, from classroom hours to the final test.
If you are at least 15 years old and enrolled in an approved driver education course, you can apply for a learner permit by showing proof of enrollment along with valid identification, then passing a vision screening and a knowledge exam. If you are 16 or older, you can apply for a permit without completing a course, as long as you pass the same vision screening and knowledge exam.
Either way, you will need documents proving your identity, Social Security number, lawful status, and Indiana residency. If you cannot provide two residency documents, an adult you live with can sign an Indiana Residency Affidavit on your behalf, as long as they bring their own ID and proof of residency.
Once you have your permit, Indiana has specific rules about who can ride with you. If you are under 16 and enrolled in driver education, you must be accompanied by a licensed driving instructor seated in the front passenger seat, or by a licensed driver who is at least 25 years old and related to you by blood, marriage, or legal status.
If you are under 18 and not enrolled in a driver education program, you can practice with a licensed driver who is at least 25 and related to you, or with a spouse who is licensed and at least 21. Drivers 18 and older may practice with any licensed driver who is at least 25, or a spouse who is licensed and at least 21.
In every case, the supervising driver must hold a valid license that is not expired, suspended, or revoked, and must be seated in the front passenger seat.
You do not need an appointment for the knowledge exam unless you need it read aloud, but you should arrive at least 30 minutes before a branch closes if you are taking the computer based test. A vision screening is required every time you apply for a permit or license, even on a renewal.
An adult who signs the agreement of financial liability for a minor permit shares responsibility for any damage the minor causes while driving, so that adult must also bring valid identification when the minor applies.
When you visit Elektra for behind the wheel lessons or your skills test, please bring your permit and wear closed toe shoes. Lessons without a permit or in sandals may need to be rescheduled, so a little preparation goes a long way.
You can renew an expired permit or replace a lost one at a BMV branch with valid identification, or online if your name and address have not changed. If it has been more than 180 days since your last knowledge exam, you will need to retake it before renewing.
Indiana licensing steps are straightforward once you know what to expect, and our team walks every student through them in the language they are most comfortable with.
